Scoliosis is a progressive disease causing curvature of the spine. It can affect people of all ages; not only children and adolescents, but also adults. Scoliosis can result in headaches, shortness of breath, back pain, digestive problems, menstrual-cycle disturbances, leg, hip and knee pain, chronic fatigue, rib hump on one side, and future spinal kyphosis (widow’s hump)

Idiopathic scoliosis is a lifetime, systemic condition of unknown cause. Scoliosis, per Dr. Woggons of the Clear Institute, is a disease of the neuromusculoskeletal system. Most common is adolescent girls, it is progressive, psychologically detrimental and can cause both increased pain and increased physical disfigurement as it progresses. Most Scoliosis are Idiopathic.

The majority of scoliosis cases do not require surgical treatment, which can be debilitating both physically and emotionally, especially for an adolescent. Early scoliosis treatment and proper screening is important for a good outcome. Our Scoliosis treatment method does not require the use of braces for scoliosis correction.

Dr. Beck is happy to assist you with any questions you may have. He is available to discuss your case by telephone or by e-mail.

There is Hope

After a few minutes spent reviewing internet sites devoted to scoliosis, you might end up feeling rather depressed and overwhelmed by the mass of contradictory and unscientific information to be found. It is no small wonder that so many scoliosis surgeries take place every year – from what you read on the internet it seems to be the only option. In this report you will learn why it should by your last option, not your first.

This is why Beck Wellness Center is excited to promote the teaching and philosophy of the CLEAR Institute: This is a non-surgical treatment for scoliosis, with no psychological or physical scarring, that achieves lasting, positive results! This is the best alternative scoliosis treatment available. It is the message of hope that defines who we are, even more so than the results we achieve.

How Does Scoliosis Affect your Health?

Scoliosis is estimated to affect 4.5% of general population. In a nation of approximately 300 million people this mean that over 13 million cases of scoliosis exist, and almost 500 more are diagnosed each day – about 173,000 every year. According to come studies, the average scoliosis patient will suffer a 14-year reduction in their average life expectancy. This means that if by some miracle we could eliminate scoliosis completely this would add 168 million years of health and productivity to our society. Clearly this is not a minor issue, but an epidemic, and one that should be taken very seriously. Other health considerations are head aches, shortness of breath, back pain, digestive problems, menstrual-cycle disturbances, leg, hip and knee pain, chronic fatigue, rib hump on one side, and future spinal kyphosis (widow’s hump).

There are no scoliosis experts. If there were, there would be no scoliosis patients. Please consider all the information you get carefully, evaluate the alternatives, and then make a conscious and deliberated decision on its validity. For too long, professional jealousy and ego have dominated all facets of the healthcare profession. It is time to refocus on the real reason our profession exists – without any patients, there would be no doctors. Let us place the health and well-being of those who have been entrusted to our card before any personal considerations, and work together to find the most effective treatment for every condition.

The Traditional Medical Model of Treatment for Scoliosis

“Wait and See” Phase

What this phase of treatment is about is just waiting to see if the scoliosis gets worse or not. The physician usually or the orthopedic surgeon will simply re-x-ray a scoliosis patient, starting from Juvenile, adolescent, or adults, periodically. This method of waiting for the Scoliosis to get worse and simply just watching it do so does not ring true at Beck Wellness Center. Let me pose a question. If you had scoliosis at 15 degrees, do you think it would be easier to treat at 15 degrees or 25 degrees? I hope you said 15 degrees. Letting a Scoliosis continue checked and untreated doesn’t make sense. This is absolutely the best time to start treatment. Also much less treatment will be needed to decrease the Scoliosis. I do not use the word correct or cure when talking about Scoliosis. I do not believe anyone can cure or correct all scoliosis. I do believe and found it quite workable to reduce or decrease the scoliosis even by only 10 degrees in the previous example would be very wonderful and beneficial to the patient.

“Bracing” Phase

scoliosis-diagram1.jpg

At around 25 degrees of scoliosis bracing is considered as a treatment. There is soft bracing and hard bracing. There are many brands of both and research tells up that at best the bracing only slows or stops the scoliosis progression in 1/3rd of bracing patient. In other word bracing does not correct the scoliosis and in 2/3rds of the braced patient the Scoliosis continued to worsen. Some research on bracing indicated that patients only wore the brace 10% of the prescribed 23 hours a day. Other research points to the mental scared from wearing the brace during a socially active and important period of an adolescent’s life.

Bottom line is bracing has been rejected as a form of treatment by some European Centers due to its lack of results.

“Surgical” Phase

If the scoliosis continues to worsen surgical treatment is considered an option when the angles approach 40 degrees. The average pre operative scoliosis curvature is 72 degrees, while post operative surgical treatment for scoliosis results in on un impressive 44 degrees which then continues to deteriorate and in a few years the scoliosis is once again at 72 degrees.

Other problems with scoliosis surgery have been recognized. The most common surgery has been the use of Harrington Rods at spiral fusion. Other surgeries include staples, plates, implants f various types. Research and follow up on post surgical cares has been extensive and here is a list of complications.

  • 25% reduction in spinal range of motion
  • Breaking of the Harrington Rods then needing a 2nd more delicate surgery to remove the rods.
  • Higher back pain scores
  • The syndrome of inappropriate anti diuretic hormone, poneraetitis superior mesenteric artery syndrome, ileus pnemothorac, hemo thorax, chilo thorax and let embolism.
  • Urinary track infections, wound infection and hard ware failure are common and most research does not even address the frequency of occurrence

Paul Harrington, the inventor of the Harrington Rod surgery, said it best himself “Metal does not cure the disease as scoliosis, which is a condition involving much more than the spiral column”.

OK if doing nothing doesn’t help one but research has shown that you are better off to do nothing than have surgery.

There are alternative treatment that have been researched and have not passed the test.

  • Stand alone eranio sacrol treatments for scoliosis
  • Shoe lifts, shoe inserts
  • Traditional Chiropractic adjustments

Scoliosis treatment is very difficult, but there is hope

A small group of chiropractors have blazed a path which is called the Clear Institute for scoliosis correction. Before we begin its important to point out that there are no miracles only hard work of all participants doing there part. There is no room for victims in scoliosis treatment, only warriors who are willing to put in the time and effort and then reap the benefits.

If you’re a warrior read on (if you’re a victim don’t bother) to find out how you can reduce your scoliosis and maintain your health and life in the process. The pilot research showed the clear methods to be very effective. On September 14th, 2004 an article was published in the BMC Musculo Skeletal Disorders entitled “Scoliosis Treatment using a combination of manipulative and rehabilitative therapy”. In this study 22 patients with scoliosis under went a new type of treatment. After 4-6 weeks of treatment the scoliosis patients who remained had a reduction of the scoliosis cobb angles of 62% no cobb angles increased. Eight of the nineteen were no longer considered scoliosis patients and the cobb angel was below 10 degrees. Three subjects were dismissed from the study for non compliance relating to home care instructions.

My personal clinical experience over the past year confirms there findings. So how can we achieve there fantastic results?

After an extensive examination and X-rays a treatment program is developed.

This includes:

  1. Treatment in the office
  2. Homecare and exercises

In the Office

Each visit is started with warm up exercises and procedures. Then the specific adjustments procedures are preformed to correct the scoliosis. The final phase of each treatment is the spinal molding to help the spine accept the changes.

At Home

There are specific spinal exercises that must be done two times per day for approximately twenty minuets.

If the cobb angles are over 30 degrees a special scoliosis traction chair is used two times each day for thirty minutes.

Hard Work and Dedication

Like I said no miracles only hard work and dedication. Approximately an hour and a half in the morning and an hour and a half in the evening and three visits per week in the office for two hours each to get fantastic results. Depending on your cobb angles and your goal in treatment. Some patients come in intensely for 2-3 weeks and then go home for several months while doing their exercises and scoliosis chair. Several variations are possible, how ever exercises are a must to maintain the correction and prevent the Scoliosis from worsening. So I hope this information helps you in your quest!
